About Artadi

Located in the medieval hilltop town of Laguardia in the heart of Rioja Alavesa, Artadi is widely regarded as one of Spain’s most influential and prestigious wine estates. Founded in 1985 as a cooperative of local grape growers, the project was led from the outset by Juan Carlos López de Lacalle, whose vision helped transform the estate into a benchmark producer of terroir-driven wines. In 1992, the Lacalle y Laorden family assumed full control of the winery and continue to own and manage it today, with the fifth generation of the family now actively involved in the business.

Artadi played a pivotal role in the modern renaissance of Rioja by championing single-vineyard expressions and focusing on vineyard character rather than traditional ageing classifications. The estate farms old-vine Tempranillo vineyards on limestone-rich soils around Laguardia and Elvillar, many situated at elevations above 600 metres. Sustainable and organic viticulture are central to the philosophy, with a strong emphasis on preserving the natural environment and expressing individual terroirs.

In 2015, Artadi made headlines by leaving the Rioja DOCa, believing that vineyard identity and terroir should take precedence over regional classifications. Today, the winery produces a range of highly acclaimed wines, including Viñas de Gain, Valdeginés, El Carretil, La Poza de Ballesteros, Quintanilla, San Lázaro and the iconic El Pisón, one of Spain’s most celebrated single-vineyard wines. Artadi’s wines are renowned for their purity, elegance, mineral precision and exceptional ageing potential.
