Astobiza

Astobiza is one of the leading modern estates of the Basque Country, producing distinctive Atlantic wines that demonstrate the serious, age-worthy potential of Txakoli. The family-owned winery is located in Okondo, Álava, around 30 kilometres from Bilbao, within the DOP Arabako Txakolina. Its vineyards sit at approximately 250 metres above sea level, surrounded by mountains that provide protection from fog and damaging winter frosts.

The project is driven by the Abando-Moyua family, particularly Xabier Abando and Begoña Moyua. Its origins date to 1996, when the first vines were planted. After a decade focused on establishing the vineyards, the winery was constructed in 2006 and the first estate vintage produced in 2007. Renowned Basque winemaker Ana Martín has been involved with the project since its formative years.

The core Astobiza estate comprises around 10 hectares divided into seven micro-parcels. Plantings are entirely focused on local varieties, principally Hondarrabi Zuri, alongside Hondarrabi Zuri Zerratie (Petit Courbu) and a small amount of Izkiriota/Gros Manseng. Sustainability, minimal intervention and careful vineyard management are central to the philosophy.

Astobiza’s range extends well beyond traditional youthful Txakoli. Alongside its flagship dry white and rosé, the estate produces Malkoa, an ambitious long-aged Txakoli, Malkoa Rosé, Late Harvest and limited Private Collection wines.

The house style combines vibrant Atlantic acidity, aromatic purity and pronounced minerality, while its longer-aged wines reveal greater texture, complexity and impressive ageing potential.
