About Bodegas Gutiérrez Colosia
Few Sherry houses are as closely connected to their surroundings as Bodegas Gutiérrez Colosía, whose historic cellars stand directly beside the Guadalete River in El Puerto de Santa María. The combination of Atlantic breezes and river humidity creates particularly favourable conditions for ageing Sherry, especially the development of the protective layer of flor essential to the character of Fino.
The oldest bodega was built in 1838 and retains its traditional cathedral-like architecture, with high ceilings and numerous arches helping regulate temperature and humidity. After passing through several owners, the property was acquired in the early 20th century by José Gutiérrez Dosal, great-grandfather of the current generation. In 1969, the family expanded by acquiring the ruins of the neighbouring Palace of the Count of Cumbrehermosa and constructing two additional ageing cellars.
For much of its history, Gutiérrez Colosía operated as an almacenista, ageing wines that were sold to other Sherry houses. This changed in 1998 when the family began commercialising wines under its own Gutiérrez Colosía name. The winery remains family-owned, with Juan Carlos Gutiérrez Colosía closely associated with its present-day operation.
The wines are matured through the traditional criaderas y solera system. The range provides a broad exploration of Jerez styles, encompassing Fino, Amontillado, Oloroso, Palo Cortado, Cream, Moscatel and Pedro Ximénez, alongside aged brandies and Sherry vinegar.
Gutiérrez Colosía’s identity is defined by tradition, family ownership and its exceptional riverside location, producing characterful Sherries that reflect the distinctive maritime environment of El Puerto de Santa María.
