About Bodegas y Viñedos Merayo
With old vines, indigenous varieties and deep family roots in Bierzo, Bodegas y Viñedos Merayo is a strong expression of this distinctive corner of north-western Spain. The winery is based in San Andrés de Montejos, near Ponferrada in León, and focuses on producing characterful wines from the region’s two signature grapes, Mencía and Godello.
The Merayo family has been closely connected with viticulture for generations. For much of the 20th century, the family cultivated vineyards while also producing wine, before winemaking activity was temporarily discontinued in the late 1980s. Crucially, the vineyards were retained rather than abandoned. In 2010, Pedro Merayo revived the family’s winemaking tradition, establishing the modern Bodegas y Viñedos Merayo and bringing these mature vineyards back to the centre of the project.
Today, the estate works with approximately 20 hectares of its own vineyards, while also sourcing grapes from trusted local growers. Many vines are old, with some Mencía parcels exceeding 80 years of age. Vineyards are distributed across different sites around the Bierzo basin, where altitude, orientation and predominantly clay-rich soils containing stones and slate create considerable diversity.
Mencía is at the heart of the red wines, producing fragrant, fresh and finely structured expressions with red and dark fruit, floral notes and mineral character. Godello forms the basis of the whites, delivering freshness, texture and aromatic complexity. The range includes Merayo Mencía, Merayo Godello, the old-vine Las Tres Filas Mencía and the more ambitious Aquiana, sourced from selected high-quality parcels.
Combining traditional vineyards with modern, precise winemaking, Merayo produces wines that emphasise freshness, balance and varietal character while clearly reflecting the landscape and increasingly recognised potential of DO Bierzo.
