About Château de Chambert

Château de Chambert is the largest certified organic and biodynamic estate in Cahors, achieving organic certification in 2012 and biodynamic certification in 2015. The estate has been owned and managed since 2007 by Philippe Lejeune and his wife, Master of Wine Lin Liu, with guidance from renowned consultant winemaker Stéphane Derenoncourt. United by a deep commitment to sustainable viticulture, Philippe and Lin have been instrumental in shaping the estate’s modern identity and quality-driven reputation.

A holistic approach to vineyard management underpins their philosophy. Highland cattle are kept in adjacent fields and are allowed to graze through the vineyards after harvest until late winter, naturally controlling weeds and gently aerating the soils, while reinforcing biodiversity across the estate.

Today, Château de Chambert encompasses 45 hectares of vineyards planted predominantly to Malbec (80%), alongside Merlot (17%) and Chardonnay (3%). The average vine age is approximately 50 years. The vineyards are situated on the limestone causse plateau—widely regarded as the finest terroir within the Cahors appellation. At an elevation of 300 metres, cool nighttime temperatures temper the warmth of the day, preserving freshness and balance. In addition, September winds blowing north from Africa help to reduce disease pressure.

Soils are a mosaic of limestone, which brings tension, freshness and precision, and red iron oxide, contributing colour, depth and intensity. Grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted, with each parcel vinified separately to preserve the expression of site.

In the cellar, Philippe and Lin have progressively reduced the influence of new oak, favouring large 30-hectolitre oak foudres that respect the purity of fruit and the subtle minerality derived from the limestone soils. The Château de Chambert Cahors Malbec is aged for approximately 12 months in oak, resulting in a wine with brooding black-fruit character and refined, silky tannins. The Cahors Grand Vin, sourced from the estate’s oldest vines, is aged for 18 months in oak and combines density and elegance, with intense violet and blackberry aromas supported by a powerful yet finely structured palate.
