Wine tasting notes

Pale lemon in colour with intense, lifted aromas reminiscent of blackcurrant, lemongrass and thyme with passionfruit notes. A complex palate with classic Blind River characters that shine through: blackcurrant bud and sweet green herbs; with underlying ripe fruit and mineral notes. A pleasingly rich and powerful Sauvignon Blanc with well-balanced acidity and a long lingering finish.

Ripe greengage and peapod, aromatic and immediately recognisable as Marlborough Sauvignon but not OTT. Bone dry and with reasonable fruit density in a difficult vintage and firm texture even without any apparent winemaking tricks. Fresh, lively, correct. (JH)

Panel Tasting June 2017 - "Tinpot Hut’s wines are made from owner and winemaker Fiona Turner’s own vineyards in Blind River and combined with grapes from other carefully selected sites in Marlborough and Hawke’s Bay. This is a flinty, dry and textural wine. A concentrated and poised amalgamation of complexity and style, effortlessly pure and well composed with nice phenolics and crisp acidity. (Melanie Brown 98pts) A broad Sauvignon Blanc with cut grass and subdued passion fruit flavours. This is quite a lively, energetic wine with a lengthy finish. (Bob Campbell MW 98pts) Classic herbal, grassy and fruity bouquet with flavours of fresh lemon and grapefruit, then red apple and some tropical fruit; vibrant acidity, refreshing, balanced and well made with decent length. (Cameron Douglas MS 98pts)

Miscellaneous (2017)5 stars

Sydney International Wine Competition Dec 2017, Top 100 Blue Gold Medal - "Judges Warren Gibson said ”Very attractive. Fresh and vibrant. Excellent wine. Lifted and pure with excellent richness and length...” and Brent Marris commented “Lovely bright green notes on nose following through to palate. Great acid balance with lovely tension coming through in the wine. Good concentration right through to finish.""

Vinification Notes

After harvest, the fruit was transported to the winery for immediate pressing, with minimal skin contact to prevent juice deterioration. After settling, each batch was cool fermented in stainless steel tanks using a variety of cultured yeasts to add complexity to the blend, and to retain the fresh fruit characteristics from each of the vineyards. Shortly after fermentation, each batch was assessed and the best parcels were selected and blended before being carefully balanced and prepared for bottling.
