Domaine Carneros

Domaine Carneros was established in 1987, by Claude Taittinger, the owner of the prestigious eponymous champagne house. He was searching for a spot to make sparkling wine in California, and selected 138 acres in the heart of Carneros, which straddles the Sonoma and Napa Valleys. Here the temperatures are slightly cooler than Burgundy but slightly warmer than Champagne, and create the perfect conditions for the slow ripening of quality grapes. He appointed Eileen Crane, regarded as America's doyenne of sparkling wine, to oversee the development. In 2020 after 33 years, Eileen bestowed her role to a new female CEO, Remi Cohen. The domaine is located in the Napa Valley, based in a spectacular château which was completed in 1989 and was inspired by the 18th century Château de la Marquetterie in Champagne – the home of Taittinger. Carneros means “ram” in Spanish, and the double ram's head logo is featured on all their bottles. Domaine Carneros now have 400 acres under vine in the Carneros AVA in six estates, all within 4 miles of the château; the Entre Amis, Tula Vista, Le Ciel Serein, La Rocaille, Pompadour and the the Domaine Carneros estate. They are the only sparkling wine producer to use exclusively Carneros fruit. 250 acres are planted with Pinot Noir and 150 with Chardonnay. Domaine Carneros are committed to sustainability and are Napa Green certified for land and winery. They have the largest solar collection system of any winery in the world today, which was installed in 2003. The sparkling wines are made in the Traditional Method with meticulous attention to detail. They are all vintage dated, and aged in bottle for at least three years, whilst their top cuvée, the esteemed Le Rêve Blanc de Blancs spends six years ageing in bottle – a “dream” indeed! They also produce compelling estate Pinot Noirs, growing 20 different clones of this grape variety, each one contributing its unique flavour profile and personality. Domaine Carneros is one of the best sparkling wine estates in North America. These are elegant wines with a fine mousse, rich and complex, beautifully balanced with real depth of flavour – classic and timeless.
