About Benanti
Benanti is one of the pioneering wineries of Mount Etna and has played a defining role in the revival of Sicily's fine wine industry. Although the Benanti family's roots in Sicily date back to 1734, the modern winery was established in 1988 by Giuseppe Benanti, whose vision was to demonstrate the exceptional potential of Etna's indigenous grape varieties and volcanic terroir. Today, the family-owned estate is managed by Giuseppe's sons, Antonio and Salvino Benanti, who continue to build on their father's legacy.
Based in Viagrande, on the south-eastern slopes of Mount Etna near Catania, Benanti farms vineyards across all four sides of the Etna DOC. This unique approach allows the winery to capture the remarkable diversity of the volcano's soils, elevations and microclimates. The vineyards are cultivated using sustainable and largely organic practices, with a strong focus on preserving the identity of each individual site.
Benanti produces a range of acclaimed Etna DOC wines from native varieties including Carricante, Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio. The flagship Pietra Marina Etna Bianco Superiore is widely regarded as one of Italy's finest white wines, while Serra della Contessa and Rovittello showcase the elegance and ageing potential of Etna Rosso. Combining tradition with innovation, Benanti remains one of the benchmark producers of volcanic wines and a leading ambassador for the Etna region worldwide.
