About Gunderloch
Gunderloch is one of Rheinhessen's most highly regarded estates, celebrated for producing world-class Rieslings from the distinctive red soils of the Roter Hang. Established in 1890, the family-owned winery has played an important role in Germany's fine wine history, including as a founding member of the Verband Deutscher Prädikatsweingüter (VDP). Today, under sixth-generation owner and winemaker Johannes Hasselbach, the estate continues to evolve while remaining true to its heritage. As Johannes explains, "This is an old estate with a long history, but we have to evolve because when nature changes, so do the wines."
The estate farms 24 hectares of vineyards, the majority situated on the renowned Roter Hang, a steep, south-facing slope overlooking the Rhine between Nackenheim and Nierstein. Formed more than 280 million years ago, the area's distinctive iron-rich red slate, clay and limestone soils impart remarkable minerality, precision and longevity to Gunderloch's Rieslings. The estate's holdings include several prestigious VDP Grosse Lage vineyards, including Rothenberg, Hipping and Pettenthal.
Since assuming leadership in 2016, Johannes Hasselbach has modernised both vineyard and cellar practices, achieving certified organic status in 2022. Vineyard management focuses on improving soil health through minimal tillage, native cover crops and the innovative use of solar-powered drones to apply biodynamic preparations without compacting the soils. In the solar-powered winery, gentle, low-intervention winemaking—including spontaneous fermentation, selective skin contact, and ageing in seasoned oak casks and concrete eggs for selected wines—allows each vineyard site to express its unique character with clarity and precision.
