About Podere le Ripi
Nestled in the rolling hills of southern Tuscany, Podere Le Ripi has become one of Montalcino’s most distinctive biodynamic estates. The winery was founded in 1998 by Francesco Illy, heir to the famous Illy coffee family, after he fell in love with the wild landscape surrounding Montalcino while working as a nature photographer. What began as a personal dream slowly evolved into a serious wine project centred on sustainability, biodiversity and low-intervention farming.
Located near Castelnuovo dell’Abate, between the Orcia Valley and Mount Amiata, the estate spans forests, olive groves and vineyards spread across both the eastern and western slopes of Montalcino. Podere Le Ripi converted fully to biodynamic farming in 2012 and today operates as a self-sustaining agricultural ecosystem with animals, beehives, gardens and organic vineyards.
The winery focuses primarily on Sangiovese, producing Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino and several single-vineyard wines. Its most famous bottling is “Bonsai”, sourced from one of the world’s densest vineyards. The wines are known for their purity, energy and expressive sense of place, combining traditional Tuscan character with a modern biodynamic philosophy.
