Alonso & Pedrajo

Alonso & Pedrajo represents a new generation of Rioja producers, combining the region’s long tradition of extended ageing with a more adventurous, low-intervention approach to winemaking. Based in Villalba de Rioja, beneath the Montes Obarenes in the north-western corner of Rioja Alta, this small family project produces distinctive wines with a strong emphasis on vineyard origin, texture and individuality.

The project was created by two families, led by friends Javier Alonso and Alberto Pedrajo together with their wives. Their journey began in 2011, with the first harvest taking place in 2013. Central to the estate is Finca La Cala, a 3.5-hectare vineyard at Villalba de Rioja, where Atlantic and continental climatic influences meet. The nearby mountains provide protection while the elevated vineyards benefit from cooling conditions that help preserve freshness.

Alonso & Pedrajo follows a philosophy of minimal intervention, seeking out distinctive vineyards and allowing individual sites and grape varieties to shape the wines. Vinification is deliberately artisanal, employing indigenous yeasts and a variety of vessels including oak, concrete and clay amphorae.

The portfolio is centred around several collections. Suañé includes long-aged white, rosé and red Rioja, while La Pequeñita explores small vineyard parcels and varieties including Malvasía, Maturana Blanca and Tempranillo. Valdinero provides another expression of the Montes Obarenes terroir.

The resulting wines offer a distinctive interpretation of contemporary Rioja: characterful and textural, yet fresh and precise, combining traditional ageing with experimentation and a clear commitment to expressing the landscape of Villalba de Rioja.
